Microsoft’s Plans For Handheld Game Player And “iPod Killer”
Here’s a story that came from reporting for my book, which is coming out in May under the title "The Xbox 360 Uncloaked: The Real Story Behind Microsoft’s Next-Generation Video Game Console," www.spiderworks.com/xbox360.
In a bid to capture the huge audience for handheld entertainment gadgets, Microsoft is designing a product that combines video games, music and video in one handheld device, according to sources familiar with the project.
The Microsoft product would compete with Sony, Nintendo and Apple Computer’s products,
including the iPod. And Microsoft has some of its most seasoned talent from the division that created its popular Xbox 360 working on it. Game executive J Allard leads the project, and its director is Greg Gibson, who was the system designer on the Xbox 360 video game console. Bryan Lee, the finance chief on the Xbox business, is leading the business side of the project.
By anchoring its entertainment device as a handheld game player, Microsoft is starting from its position of strength in the entertainment business that it hopes Apple cannot match, even with its iPod. The game press has dubbed it an "iPod killer,” but its functions would likely more closely resemble Sony’s PlayStation Portable multimedia gaming device.
While details are sketchy, the pedigree of the people in charge of the business show how strategic it is to Microsoft’s future.
"That would certainly be an interesting development in the market,” said Anita Frazier, a game industry analyst at the NPD Group.
The other competitors have huge leads on Microsoft. But the Xbox veterans have been underdogs for a while. Gibson, 35, is an electrical engineer who joined Microsoft in 1997 to help design computer mice and other hardware. He shifted to the Xbox division in 1999 to help design the innards of the original Xbox. In 2002, he became the system designer in charge of the overall design of the Xbox 360.
Allard, a 36-year-old progammer who became famous for prompting Bill Gates to take the Internet seriously, commanded much of the hardware and software teams who put together the Xbox 360. Lee, a longtime entertainment executive, joined Microsoft as finance chief for the Xbox a few years ago.
The approval of the project spurred the reorganization of the leadership team in the Home and Entertainment Division in December. In September, Robbie Bach, formerly the chief Xbox officer, was promoted to lead the Entertainment and Devices Group, which combined the Xbox with other mobile and entertainment businesses in one of four major product groups.
Then in December, the jobs of the top Xbox executives were broadened so that they could manage all of the businesses related to the broader Entertainment and Devices Group, which included the Xbox business, mobile devices, MSN, music, and home productivity software. Allard, whose group designed the Xbox 360, was named to head "experience and design” for the entire group.
Sources say that the reason for the reorganization was to bring Allard, Lee, Gibson and all of the relevant businesses into a single group, which is supervised by Robbie Bach. The participation of these highly regarded Xbox veterans suggests that Microsoft is very serious about catching up with Sony’s PlayStation Portable handheld game player, Apple’s iPod music players, and Nintendo’s handheld GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS game players.
In the past, all of Microsoft’s efforts to compete have fallen short. The company considered making an ""Xboy” game player a few years ago but shelved the idea. It considered making a game handheld at the same time it devised plans for the Xbox 360 in 2002 and 2003, but it again decided to delay its entry.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s efforts in PocketPC handhelds and Portable Media Players have fallen short in competition with the iPod. Last week, Microsoft unveiled Project Origami, a handheld Windows computer. But that device isn’t targeted on pure entertainment as the Xplayer is. The existence of these other projects suggests that there is still some infighting within Microsoft about its best approach to portable gadgets.
The handheld project is still in its early stages. Microsoft is still figuring out which strategy to pursue in music technology, according to sources familiar with the matter. The code name for its music service, which would be the equivalent of Apple’s iTunes, is "Alexandria.”
One benefit of waiting longer is that the handheld will likely have sufficient technology in it to run a lot of original Xbox games from a few years ago. Hence, it wouldn’t be hard to create a new library of games for the handheld.
Signs of activity have surfaced. Transmeta, a maker of low-power chip technology, said last year that it had assigned 30 engineers to work with Microsoft on a secret project. Transmeta’s engineers work on ways to take the power out of computing chips so that they can be used in handheld devices with long battery lives.
In an interview with Business Week in January, Xbox corporate vice president Peter Moore said "it can’t just be our version of the iPod” and added the Xbox brand "is an opportunity” if Microsoft decides to enter the mobile entertainment competition. He declined to comment on the rumor about the handheld. But sources familiar with the project confirmed its existence within the Xbox organization.
What remains to be seen is when Microsoft will launch the device. Gibson may not need a large engineering team to run the project. But his group of hardware engineers only became free last fall, when most work on the Xbox 360 was completed.
It could be 2007 before the device hits store shelves. That gives rivals such as Sony, Nintendo and Apple considerable time to consolidate their position and come up with their own new gadgets in the meantime.

OK so i am tired of media types and bloggers when a new microsoft product comes out calling it a killer. please they get a certain share of the market and that is it. thier msn service never killed AOL XBOX hasnt killed PS2. the only product in its history that killed another product in the same market was in the GUI OS market. its irresponsible to keep suggesting that every new product is a killer of the product they intend to compete against. Origami: Bill’s pet project will be a dismal failure — too big for your pocket, but no replacement for a true laptop.
The PSP does gaming, video, music. Sony has a history (and strong industry ties) in all of those arenas. And yet, look at the pathetic sales.
The early adopter demo will buy Swiss Army knives, but Swiss Army knives will always be viewed as too clunky and geeky by the consumer masses.
I agree that Apple can be too smarmy and smug for their own good, but the inability of MS to actually innovate seems to be the fuel behind why there is so much malice towards killing any successful Apple product like the iPod. Yeah, yeah, I know that the iPod is made up of several licensed patents and technologies, but Apple still came up with a design for a consumer product that is elegant, simple, and most importantly, easy for anyone to use.
MS still doesn’t know the first thing about making products at an actual consumer level. You still practically have to be an engineer to actually use (and solve) anything from MS consistently or with any depth.
MS has the money (right now) to subsidize and even sustain expensive loser technologies. There’s no way MS has yet turned profit on the poorer-selling XBOXes, both old and new. In order to save face (and faith), they keep filling the well from underneath. Smarter companies have tried to beat Apple at the handheld media player market, and quietly left the scene.
Ever try one of those stupid MobiBlu things from Walmart? Pathetic and clunky interface design that looks like a middle-school science-fair imitation of iPod controls. Sandisk at least knows their niche in the player market and can intelligently work an angle–yep, they’re #2 in that market these days.
Apple came up with:
- An easy to use player with free, easy software to go with it.
- A DRM that still lets you feel like you own the music you bought, as opposed to shyster music rental models like Sony Connect and the re-animated Napster.
Those two things paired together are what makes Apple win in the Darwinian world of consumer choice. That MS-heads can’t believe that the wider world has selected any Apple product for mass market success is just sour grapes, and no, they’re not sheep for doing so. At least the Apple shepherd doesn’t lead the flock to the slaughter like using WIndows XP on broadband without a firewall.
This MS product will kill nothing, except perhaps itself, after many years of money and denial from MS.

Oh an how about the fact that halo 2 runs better on xbox live on xbox than it does on xbox 360(lag on one of the maps).

Until there is a “real” product available for preview, it’s just a nice sci-fi story for me.
Keyboards and Mice? Are you kidding? That’s the example of stellar consumer products? I should just rant about how MS just stole the idea from Mr. Qwerty and the IBM Selectric for keyboard design, and the mouse was stolen from Apple from Xerox from actual mice. But I won’t.
I use a Mac laptop at work (yeah, really) and a Win XP PC at home. I generally like Apple stuff, but I don’t think that everything they make is the best ever ever ever either. However, it does just seem foreign to say “Microsoft” and “great design” or “great execution” in the same sentence with a straight face.
Of course the 360 sold out at launch. There were 12 working models available that week. There were more hard-coded demo units embedded in Target store displays functioning, playing only the Call of Doody demo, than commercial units booting up successfully.
Yes, I exaggerate, but it is easy to sell out four figures of stock, whatever the reason for the shortage. It’s not that they’re so in demand that they sell out, it’s that there are so few trickling out for the standard number of available folks that actually want one.

Seems like its pretty clear where the money gravity really exists. MS may gain a little ground in the next few months, but nothing dramatic is my prediction.
At least MS got it right by allowing the 360 to play earlier gen XBOX games–it will keep them in the fight. Nintendo’s finally getting the concept too. Of course, concpetually, Sony got that idea first, and it eases the transition to a new console so much better–you have your whole title history as a backlog of launch titles.

hmmm i dont think that this will be an ipod killer, if you do you research, apple should be releasing their 5th generation ipod on april 1st. this ipod should have a screen that is 3.5 inches. not only will it be that big of a screen but they will get rid of the click-wheel and make it a touch screen. ohhh boy a touch screen.
Oh boy. I don’t know whether to sigh in disgust or smirk condescendingly when someone vehemently argues for or against something of which he or she knows nothing. In this case this means YOU smithy-boy.
Apple never “stole” any GUI from Xerox. Apple PAID Xerox to get access to their lab on the understanding that Apple could bring products to market based on what they learned. What’s more, Apple already HAD a GUI project by then. And to round it out, the GUI Xerox PARC had was a cousin at best with Apple’s GUI. Xerox used the icons as VERBS while Apple (and later MS) used them as NOUNS. To my knowledge MS has never paid either Xerox or Apple to use knowledge gained from their respective GUI’s though.
As to Apple not being first with portable digital music players, well duh! Now tell me something new. Or better, ask yourself why all these less crappy and more innovative competitors to Apple all are about the size of mites, relatively speaking? And Apple got where it is in the music player business despite not being able to strongarm the competition, as some other company that shall be nameless have made an art form of.
Sure, not everything Apple does is great, and not everything MS does is bad. But ask yourself this: When people make an actually informed choice, that is are actually aware that they have a choice (as opposed to buying what they’ve always bought or have at work without reflecting that some investigating might be in order), what do they tend to buy? Right.

Apple/iPod is the industry leader for the simple reason that they took an idea - hand-held music player - created a simple, yet innovative user interface and a music download system that both functions and is relatively cheap. Sounds simple to me. Now MS wants to create the “iPod killer” by doing what it does best/worst - take a marketable idea and add enough features to sink a battleship - think Office and bloatware. To paraphrase a famous quote “It’s the music, silly.”

I have an X-box and i love it - I do want to buy an X-box 360 soon but…..
Well for one thing - the X-box is 39 000 yen here at the moment with NO games available for the japanese market. They want to play RPG games not shoot them ups or 1st person shooters - the market is different here and Microsoft got it wrong again by over-pricing the machine plus releasing games that Japanese people do not traditionally want to play.
If they (i mean microsoft) wanted the X-box 360 to succeed,they should have priced it below 30 000 yen and released it with two or three new RPGs. Oh and by the way, they just released Final Fantasy 11 for it here which is useless because FF 12 just came out on the PS2 !!!!
So in conclusion - the X-box 360 might fail in japan because Microsoft has failed to get the type of games that japanese people like to play

I’m not into bashing, but I can’t jump on the Apple bandwagon either. I hate to ruin this, but Apple really didn’t ‘invent’ anything with the Ipod. They did the great capitalist trick…make it look cool, in a pretty package, and blammo…it’ll sell. So you have to give them some sort of praise on marketing and packaging. Personally, I’d never own one…but that’s just me.
Apple ‘inventing’ the mouse? Well, I hate to burst another bubble here…but if anyone out there ever heard of a company called “GE”, they developed a system for the Navy in the mid 60’s ( long ago ) that had a trackball, a joystick, and a keyboard…Variable Action Buttons ( those cool option buttons on the side of the ATM…yeah, been around for awhile ), and had a Keyboard as well. This was also the invention of IEEE 488 and the BIRTH of the floppy disk ( 5 on a common spool in a metal box, but the guts…exactly the same as a floppy…called a “Mass Memory Unit” ).
MS in Japan, yeah they get alot ( and I mean ALOT ) wrong over there…but with some decent RPGs coming out…that might help. THE 360 IS EXPENSIVE, period…so talking about how much you’d like it to be is pointless…wait until Sony charges 600-700 USD for their PS3 with almost no game support and a pointless Blu Ray drive.
A portable XBOX gaming platform? Sign me up! The PS2 couldn’t compete with the original XBox on graphics ( the orignal XBox could do High def…PS2, not so much ), and the same will be true for the PSP and the DS with respect to the new MS Handheld.
If MS does it right, and works it in with the 360…they’ll have a winner. It’s already got a target audience before it’s even ready for market.

The Nokia N91 is going to be th ipod killer and theres not really anything ne1 can do about it because it has the same memory as a ipod mini(4gb) and is a 2 megapixel phone with bluetooth wi-fi and video recording.

So…why are playstation fanboys getting pissed off at this? Turn around and look at the PSP, it’s basically a $250 piece of crap. Yea, I’ll give it that it can play mp3’s, movies, has pretty decent graphics (for a portable gaming machine) and all the wi-fi crap, but do you really think that it’s any better than the DS or GBA? Yea….almost.
As for the Playstation 2 *selling more units*, you talk about how the 360 only sold systems because it was the only next gen system available. Well, what else was there when PS2 first launched, Dreamcast? I personally liked the dreamcast, but not much online support and nowhere near the software support that Sony had? Who wouldn’t want the PS2 instead, plus the fact that it released, what, a year before the xbox? It certainly had enough time and energy invested into it to make it a great system, because that’s what it is, a great system.
And all that crap about “xbox is only good because of Halo” is bullshit. Just because a company can design a game good enough to sell $150-$300 systems, it’s not MS’s fault. In fact, Playstation doesn’t have too many amazing exclusive titles anymore. God of War and Kingdom Hearts are amazing (yea, I know, kingdom hearts: chain of memories came out on gba), Gran Turismo has always been an awesome driving game, and Grand Theft Auto, oh wait, that’s also on Xbox, isn’t it? Final Fantasy, simply amazing, but MS now has Square Enix developing for them as well, so who knows what we’ll see.
In the end, who cares who wins or loses? We’re the one’s who are gonna get the best from the best, and each company has enough money to finance their projects for a while. So let’s just wait and see what’ll happen, because both systems are going to blow their predeccesors out of the water, and I welcome the splash-back.
This will really mix things up in my opinion. You’ve only got to see how Sony has learned from Xbox Live to see how everyone benefits from a proper competitive market.

I would like to know what Dean thinks of the following..
I have read the MSFT+Transmeta Agreement in length..
These are what the MSFT Deal Indicates.
* Transmeta is Designing a Reference Design.
* Transmeta is Modifying its Code morphing software to meet microsoft specifications.
* Transmeta is Managing the creation of a Prototype though a third party vendor.
May I ask Dean.
why in this contract is there no mention of a 3D graphics designer ?
Why in this contract is there no mention of any games developers ?
Why in this contract is there no mention of a final - “To market” stage.. (strangely enough the contract stops at the prototype stage) ?
And why there is no mention of a Medium Vendor.. ie a medium for the games.. e.g Mini DVD or something similar ?

Presumably the Handheld XBOX is modelled on the original XBOX (as the Transmeta CPU is x86 and the XBOX 360 is IBM POWER it makes no sense for them to be making model based on the newer POWER design)
If this is the case then how would microsoft profit from such a venture ?
We know that the XBOX business model is to sell the units at a loss and make money from Licensing to Game manufacturers. But if the XBOX games are already created.. how do you suggest MSFT would lever more Revenues from this model ?

Hmm, because it is a “secret project.” You can’t exactly go around revealing everything, especially things your company isn’t involved with, like software or specific aspects that would reveal the product. If Transmeta is involved in this project, it can only mention relevant information and use generic terms such as “work” to avoid compromising the project or lawsuits.
The original XBox is also an x86 (Intel PIII) not a PowerPC, and most people assume that the handheld would bring back these games not XBox 360 titles, which a handheld couldn’t manage anyway. A Transmeta Efficeon board with a decent graphics chipset could manage existing XBox titles with some modification since this can obviously run x86 and has a software Code Morphing layer which acts like an emulator.
As for its media, the PSP failed with the UMD model. It would be most appropriate for Microsoft not to use any non standard media and use something like a hard drive or flash instead. This is more consistant with a download on demand type service such as the one Sony is attempting now.
Lastly, I might want to mention that Alphi is from a stock message board where he coincidentally is anti-Transmeta at this time if that means anything. Of course I am sure Dean wouldn’t care, nor would he about my post. Good job on your book, since that is what we should be most interested in, not Transmeta stock.
