A Giants fan’s creative jersey protest

Dave Doolin, a hardware engineer from San Jose, is a Giants fan. But he’s a little tired of the antics of a certain left fielder and his pursuit of certain baseball records.

With MLB.com’s unwitting help, he did something about it. Doolin bought this jersey at their online store and plans to wear it to each of the handful of games he attends this season. Hey, it’s his $238.14, he can do what he wants with it.

“I figure I’ll either get a free beer or get a beer dumped on me, one or the other,” he says.

I was a little surprised the jersey made it through the filter, after the problems that ensued last year when a former professor of Randall Gay was stopped while trying to buy the Patriots cornerback’s replica jersey on NFL.com.

MLB.com spokesman Jim Gallagher said the league has hundreds of words on the banned list, but “Asterisk” wasn’t one of them.

“Who would think of it? The word itself is neither inappropriate, derogatory or profane,” he said. “But certainly the context
in which you’ve described, it’s clearly inappropriate and does not reflect well on the game.”

Gallagher added that after the automated system does its thing, “There’s usually a human check. In this case, we’re talking about plain and simple human error. Somebody made a mistake.”

Doolin said he previewed “Balco,” “Conte,” “Cream” and “Clear,” and also a Cardinals jersey with “Andro 70,” but chose “Asterisk 73″ for its subtlety. Man, if that’s subtle, in that ballpark, then I guess it’s true that the Giants cater more to the stargazer than the average fan.

I’d buy him a beer for creativity alone. But I’ll make sure to check the police blotter this summer to see if anyone goes the other route.

  1. If you like that jersey, you’ll like our Bonds shirts! http://www.balcoshirt.com

  2. Great idea. Not as funny as when I worked in Detroit during the Russian Invasion days and some guy ordered a customized “I. Beatov” jersey, but still well played.

  3. That is great! Why are the Giants even considering, let alone actually signing, Barry Bonds? He is, and has been, a disgrace to the Giants organization for many years. No one should put himself/herself above others because they might have a special talent.
    I guess it’s all about $$$$.
