Earthquakes acquire Joe Cannon

The Earthquakes dipped into their past again Thursday, acquiring goalkeeper Joe Cannon in exchange for a partial allocation.

Looking at the stat sheet — always dangerous in soccer, I know — could give one pause. For one thing, Cannon is 33 years old; for another, his GAA has gone from 1.20 (Colorado) to 1.55 (Colorado) to 1.59 (Galaxy) in the past three years. But our resident Merc expert — we have one and he shall remain anonymous — tells me “he played great most of the year for a crappy team.” Could be good experience on an expansion outfit.

Cannon played his first five MLS seasons in San Jose, where among his teammates was the expansion team’s G.M., John Doyle. He grew up in Los Altos Hills and played at St. Francis High and Santa Clara University – talk about home-field advantage now — and helped the Quakes win the MLS Cup in 2001.

Plus, Cannon is the young guy of the two. The other goalie, Preston Burpo, is a 35-year-old former A-Leaguer, although he does have a name the kids would love.

–My man inside tells me the news at the very bottom of the release, that expansion draftee Clarence Goodson “has decided to pursue an overseas opportunity,” is not good news. He was a legit starter on the back line for Dallas.
