Super Bowl end 1Q: That’s a nightmare for square pools
Damnedest thing, and you can look it up: With the Giants’ field goal, it’s now Opponents 6, Patriots 0 in the four Super Bowls New England has played this decade. But that’s brutal. I’m not in a square pool, but can you imagine being the guy who had the 7/3 square thinking Laurence Maroney was going to bust that one in?
That has been happening throughout the playoffs — the Chargers’ long screen pass was on the last play of the third quarter, for instance. I count this as at least the fifth instance of a team scoring shortly into the following quarter from right near the goal line, or surprisingly scoring from long distance just before the end of the quarter. Brutal. That’s why you shouldn’t gamble.
–So the Pats do not have their offense quite rolling yet, at least on the scoreboard. But I gotta believe if the Giants don’t score a touchdown on their next drive, that’s when it starts to get out of hand.
