Cal, SJS, lead CCS football commitment list
With the Feb. 6 signing day coming soon, here is a fairly comprehensive list of Central Coast Section football commitments so far.
These are compiled from conversations with coaches and parents, from accounts in other newspapers, and from rivals.com.
Player (high school), Pos., Ht., Wt., College
Kiko Alonso (Los Gatos), LB, 6-3, 235, Oregon
Tanner Burns (Valley Christian), DB, 6-1, 175, San Jose State
Daniel Carrillo (Valley Christian), DB-RB, 6-0, 170, San Jose State
Chad Davis (Palma), LB, 6-0, 195, UC Davis
A.J. Ellis (Andrew Hill), RB-DB, 5-10, 170, Fresno State
DeLeon Eskridge (Serra), RB, 5-11, 180, Minnesota
Mark Forrest (Oak Grove), DL, 6-7, 205, Nevada
Aaron Huck (Oak Grove), OL, 6-3, 290, Nevada
J.P. Hurrell (Serra), LB, 6-0, 165, Cal
Nick Kalpin (Los Gatos), RB, 5-11, 205, Portland State
Anthony Miller (Archbishop Mitty), TE, 6-2, 250, Cal
Litani MoiMoi (Menlo-Atherton), DL, 6-3, 280, UNLV
Seta Pohahau (Aragon), RB, 5-10, 190, BYU
Thomas Reynolds (Archbishop Mitty), RB, 5-11, 190, Cal Poly
Charles Satchell (Milpitas), WR, 6-2, 190, Cal
Tiuke Tuipulotu (Serra), DB, 5-9, 170, San Jose State
Some observations: Serra has done very well with three players ready to sign … Cal and San Jose State each have landed three players on this list … Valley Christian continues to be a San Jose State pipeline … Serra running back DeLeon Eskridge is the only CCS player to advance to a non-Pac 10 BCS conference … I don’t believe Riordan WR-DB Daniel Cannon has made a commitment yet, though rivals.com said he’s been offered by Arizona … Former Westmont High RB-WR-DB Chantz Staden of De Anza College has committed to Washington State.
If you know of any others, and these would include Ivy League recruits, please e-mail me at dkiefer@mercurynews.com. The paper will run a list of Santa Clara County recruits next week. But, if I get some other names, including players from outside the county, I’ll post a comprehensive list here.

The kids going to Cal have only a 50-50 chance of graduating. What a disgrace.

Send them east, they will graduate.
The numbers the author used in the article are from an old system and are based on players recruited during the Holmoe era (1997-2001). The NCAA now has a new grad tracking system, the APR, and in the most recent release Cal was the only BCS school whose players had a perfect APR.

A couple of other Mitty commits are Brian McKeon~Sac State and Jaiye Falusi~Princeton.
Way to go to all of the players!!! I am sure we are going to see a lot more action after Feb 6 because there are some obvious names missing from the list.
Good luck to all!
PS~Don’tlikethebears,
Please explain your comment about your prediction regarding graduation. That is a heck of a thing to write about the kids.
Go Spartans hope fully with these new recruits there program will excel to another level!!!
CONGRATS to all the kids!!! your hard worked paid off and now it’s time to start a new chapter in your lives good job guys and a special Congrats to Daniel Carrillo good job Bear your journey has just begun!!! we are very proud of you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations to everyone on the list, your hardwork has paid off. Now remember to stay focused, don’t forget you are going to school for grades / graduation first and sports second. To the SJS recruits, welcome to a program / university that is on the rise. Soon you will be part of a school that has more alumns in the Bay Area then any other school, and has an amazing and long history. We look forward to seeing you all on the field playing for the mighty Spartans.
Now the big question to the college coaches, how can you let Minnesota, Nevada, and UNLV come in and recruit these guys away for CA. There are plenty of schools in CA, that should be able to lock up any of these recruits. The diversity that the CA colleges/universities offer should be enticing enough to keep them around.
What about Darius Bell out of Riordan. I am sure he will be playing Div 1, he is one of the best players to come out of the CCS in the last few years. I thought he was the best this past year. Anyone know what school he is going to?
Any word on VC’s Ryan Gardner. I thought he was going to the Air Force Academy. Has that changed?
Ryan Gardner graduated last year and went to Air Force. From an Internet search, it appears as if he played defense for Air Force Prep. I believe that would mean that he would still have four years of eligibility at the Air Force Academy assuming that’s where he is headed next. As for Darius Bell, no word yet on him, but I know that he wanted to play quarterback in college and some schools wanted him to switch positions.
Is Aaron Huck related to a former SJS standout named Rick Huck who played for Claude Gilbert’s 1988-89 teams? If so, we must ask the question: Why doesn’t SJS get 2nd-generation players? Great programs are able to attract the talented off-spring of former players. We do an abysmal job of getting former Spartans to send their kids to SJS. Mervyn Fernandez’ kid went to Fresno State!!! A number of other former SJS players kids have ended up wearing FSU red. Or they go to places like Nevada, San Diego State, UNLV, WSU, etc.
Great programs are built thru continuity and tradition. SJS needs to put a “full-court press” on getting these former Spartans to encourage their sons or daughters to become Spartans.
One reason I can think of that we lose these kids is that when you go back to the days that these guys were Spartans, what kind of experience did they have at SJS?
Did they play for a shoe-string operation run by a ding-bat Athletic Director and an byzantine school bureaucracy that told kids “we don’t care about you - just stay eligible so you can play”??
That was then. SJS is much better now and we need to sell former players on the new SJS. The question: Will they care to listen?
Mark, Aaron Huck is the son of Rick Huck, a former Spartan who is an assistant coach at Oak Grove. I don’t know the extent of San Jose State’s interest in Aaron Huck, but I’m fairly certain it was nowhere near Nevada’s.
what about Danny Cannon out of CCS, wasn’t this kid All State, All Metro, All League? Isn’t California Schools recruiting him, or is he going out of State? I seen this kid play, he’s great on both sides of the ball. Anything on him?
home grown talent equals improvement in the program. if you build it, they will come. besides, who cares about ethee anyway. hell, stainford! keep it cal and sjs, folks. high time.
What about Kenny Jackson? Great contributor to the game.
To some people on this blog, why hate? Just congratulate these kids and wish them luck at this next level. SJSU or elsewhere…they are going to play and get an education. Don’t be jealous…just get out and go to a game and bring a friend or two while your at it. I’m sure all these kids went to where they felt it was right for them, plus you want to go to a school that has watched you play and has taken interest in you for that certain position…come on MARK shouldn’t you know that..for example, the Huck and Forest combo…these kids said they wanted to go as a package. If that’s the stand they put out there then that’s where it takes them…kudos to them for standing by what they feel is right. I don’t doubt Tomey didn’t look, but if your filled in that slot you can’t take a scholarship and toss it..duhh! Plus the whole college experience is really to get out of your normal surroundings..I guess it takes a little bit of education on the subject of football to understand what really goes on with that stuff. As for me, I’m looking forward to hearing great things come from all the local kids who’ve made it this far, especially since they are somewhere in the top 10% of such a narrow and accomplished field. Like I said…buy a ticket and support. Good job coaches…you should be proud.
What about the nose gaurd out of Saint Francis? Is he getting any D1 attention?
San Jose State will never get what it takes to be a great hometown recruiter! There coaches go for quick fixes at the junior college level! Plus what can SJSU provide to a recruit that they can’t get anywhere else! 2000 people per game, bad stadium, bad schedule, bad budget! All those other schools have more to offer a kid! SJSU gets many last resort athletes who have no other place to go besides SJSU!!!
Quote the Raven, nevermore!
CCSGURU,
Ihave to disagree with you when you said SJSU gets last resort athletes who have no other places to go I know for a fact that Carrillo had other places that wanted him and he chose SJSU so you shouldnt say all the kids that SJSU gets have no other place to go besides SJSU
I am done some checking and Jacob Feagai SJSU right now is his only offer. The other school are waiting on his SAT scores but, they also have run out of scholorships. SJSU will Prop 48 one 1 player if he is worth it and Jacob is.
Oregon will be getting 2 more commits to give them 23 and Cal does not take any prop 48 players
I hate to say this but many people on this blog are…right. That is when it comes to the observations of many regarding SJSU’s recruiting ( or lack thereof ).
When SJSU was really good in the 1970’s and 1980’s- many of the top local players were recruited and starred for winning teams at SJSU. Today, the PAC 10 schools swope in and give scholarships to people that SJSU isn’t even recruiting. NFL players like Brendan Ayambadejo, Jared Allen, Gibril Wilson, etc. all came from this area, wanted to go to SJSU and didn’t get any interest despite the fact that they are ALL in the NFL now.
Say what you want but this area has a lot of talented football players. SJSU needs to start getting them and they will be up and down until they do - again!
And, by the way, Huck and Forrest received little to no attention from SJSU until AFTER they learned that they had orally committed to Nevada Reno - then they talked to them.
Nice job, Spartans!
Dangerously Dumb:
Your name rest your case!
Ranger John says:
Everybody seems to be an arm chair qb at this time of recruiting. The real answers come from the coaches that review tapes, meet and greet players, do background checks on players, etc. The average fan just doesn’t have a clue like some of the recent posts!
Toomey has gotten some great DB’s, and I think Owen and Lowery may be some of the best since L. Wright (former Bronco star). Getting the needs filled is most important, LB, DB, OL, and kicker/s.
In this day and age players put their videoes out to many places and it is up to the coaches doing the homework. Sure the PAc 10 and Big Ten get the cream out here, but there are a lot of great players in CA, especially in SoCal.
JK
You can add:
Quinn Garner (Santa Cruz), LB 6-3 230 to Utah State
Deionte Gordon (Seaside), DB 5-11 175 to Sac State
