Robin Lopez is dating Michelle Wie? How very Stanford
* 11:25 a.m. Thursday CDT update: Oops. Thanks to an e-mailer who informed me that an earlier report of this came on CBSSportsline.com last Sunday, and this is true. I should’ve known that because the author, Billy Witz, is a good friend of mine, sat very near me in Anaheim and is a tremendous reporter….
There were rumors about this around Stanford, but nothing solid or even digital until this SI.com story hit.
Actually, there still was nothing for a few days after the story hit… until people noticed that there was a passing reference to Robin Lopez dating Michelle Wie in the SI.com story.
If it’s true, and I assume it is, then good for both of them–if they’re still dating. Stanford does seem like a place for two high-profile teenagers to feel at home with each other.
There are no quotes in the story about the relationship–can’t believe Wie’s camp wants much chatter on this.
Now that it’s out, right before Stanford’s media availability tomorrow morning, I don’t know if Robin’s going to want to address this.
Not too convenient for him, if he wants to be cagey about this.
Clearly, it’s not much of our business. They’re young, they’re bright, they’re super-athletes. If they want to talk about, fine. If they don’t, more power to them.
I will say that it’s interesting to hear this as Robin’s draft stock goes up, up, up… and so does the general thinking that he’ll probably jump to the NBA this spring along with his brother Brook.
That’s assuming Robin is a top 15/20 pick, which he just might be right now.
Blogging about teenagers dating is voyeuristic at best, and depraved at worst. Any sportswriter who asks Lopez about it should be fired.

If this is yours and the Mercury News’ idea of news then I think you both need some serious help. This is not an earth shattering item and I seriously doubt if the readers even care who they date. No wonder the paper is in such desparate straits if this is the best you can do for an “newsworthy” article.
This clears a lot of things up! ….it is also quite a relief. I thought Robin was dating a Nintendo Wii!
