Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the richest guy of all?

Not Bill Gates. He doesn’t even come in second anymore.

After 13 years as the world’s wealthiest person, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, a symbol of the New Economy, has lost the title to a guy who famously said he didn’t understand technology: Warren Buffett, who heads insurance giant Berkshire Hathaway.

Thanks to a big rise in Berkshire’s stock, uber-investor Buffett is worth $62 billion, up $10 billion from last year, according to Forbes magazine, which just released its latest ranking of the world’s billionaires.

Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim Helu is a shade behind, with $60 billion.

Poor Bill’s wealth is up $2 billion from last year, but that puts his hoard at just $58 billion, says Forbes. It’s a sudden turnaround — as recently as September, when the magazine published its annual list of richest Americans, Gates was worth $7 billion more than Buffett.

If only that darned offer to buy Yahoo hadn’t tanked Microsoft’s stock….

Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison remains the richest guy in Silicon Valley – and third-richest in the U.S.  — coming in No. 14 on the global list with $25 billion.

And those precocious Google boys, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are comparative paupers, worth just $19 billion apiece.

Overall, counted 1,125 billionaires aroudn the world this year, up 19 percent from the previous year.
